BookLyre — Terms of Use and Disclaimer
Version 3 · Effective October 24, 2026
BookLyre is made and sold by Brandon J Conover, an individual developer in Arkansas, USA ("we", "us").
BookLyre turns DRM-free books you have lawfully obtained into an audiobook experience, with a distinct AI-generated voice for each character. By tapping "I understand and agree", you accept these terms.
1. What BookLyre is for
BookLyre analyses an EPUB, identifies its characters, assigns each line of dialogue to a speaker, and narrates it with on-device AI voices. It is designed for listening to books you own. It is not a replacement for professionally recorded audiobooks.
2. Your rights to the works you use
You may use BookLyre to listen to books you have lawfully obtained. Audio, text, or any other output made from a book is for your personal, private use only. You may not share, sell, publish, upload, or otherwise distribute it. Audio made from your books stays inside BookLyre: it is stored encrypted on your device and cannot be exported. The book files you add remain yours and stay available to you.
Your responsibility. You are solely responsible for the books you import and for how you use BookLyre.
3. DRM-free files only
BookLyre works only with DRM-free files. It does not remove, decrypt, or work around DRM or any other copy protection, and it will not import an EPUB that it detects is protected by DRM. Books and audiobooks purchased from stores that apply DRM will not import or play.
4. Synthetic voices
The narration and character voices that BookLyre generates are synthetic (AI-generated) and are produced on your device. If BookLyre's voice model is unavailable, it may use the voices built into iOS, which are also synthetic. Some voices have accents; a voice chosen for a character may not always match how you imagine that character.
5. Accuracy
Character detection, dialogue assignment, and series grouping are automatic and are not guaranteed to be 100% accurate. Lines may be assigned to the wrong character or to the narrator, and names or words may be mispronounced. You can review and correct assignments in the app.
6. On-device processing
BookLyre does not use cloud-based processing. Your books are analysed, and their audio is generated, on your device. BookLyre does not upload your books or generated audio to us or to any third-party processing service.
Because processing happens on your device, there are practical limits:
- Listening. Narration is prepared as you listen. While BookLyre is open it uses your device's graphics processor. When you switch to another app or lock your device, listening continues using the main processor, which is slower; if preparation falls behind, playback may pause until the next sentences are ready.
- Preparing ahead. You can prepare a whole book in advance, or let BookLyre prepare it overnight while your device is charging, so listening never waits.
- Storage. BookLyre, including its built-in voice model, needs about 1 GB. Prepared audio is stored as encrypted sentence clips and also takes space. You can see and delete each book's audio in Settings → Storage. By default, audio for a book you haven't opened for a while is removed automatically (you can change or turn this off); it is prepared again the next time you listen.
- Heat and battery. Preparing audio is demanding, and your device may become warm and use more battery. BookLyre slows down automatically when your device gets hot and waits for it to cool if it gets very hot.
7. Backups and loss of work
Your books, character and voice settings, and prepared audio are stored on your device. BookLyre is not responsible for any loss of data, including loss caused by app updates, errors, deleting the app, device failure, loss or theft of the device, or running out of storage. Keep your own copies of the book files you import. Prepared audio can always be prepared again from the book.
8. Planned: self-hosted server option
We plan to offer an optional way to run BookLyre on a server that you host yourself. It is intended to create higher-fidelity audiobooks much faster. This option is not yet available. Its features and timing may change, and it will be subject to its own terms when released.
9. Purchases
BookLyre is a paid app. The price you pay on the App Store includes every feature, including the full cast (a distinct voice for each character) on every book. There are no in-app purchases or subscriptions. The app is sold through Apple's App Store and is subject to Apple's terms, including its refund policies.
10. No warranty
BookLyre is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement.
11. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for loss of data, revenue, or profits, arising from your use of BookLyre. Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for the app or in-app purchases in the twelve months before the claim.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If we make a material change, BookLyre will ask you to review and accept the new version before you continue using it.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Arkansas, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, except where the law of the country you live in requires otherwise. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection laws that cannot be waived.
